October 2022 Newsletter

Save the Date: Saturday November 19th

That is the date for: the Lighted Tractor Parade, Santa arriving in town, and the Christmas Decorations light-up night. There will be more information in next month’s Newsletter.

Trick-or-Treat night:

Borough Trick-or-Treat will be Thursday October 27th from 6:00 pm until 7:30 pm. If you do not live downtown and would like to pass out candy, or donate candy, we can make arrangements for a location for you, or where you can donate it. This has turned into a major event, and any donations are welcome!

Once again, this year, the back streets downtown will be closed to traffic.

It is an exhilarating time of the year when all the leaves turn color. But the downside is what follows…dead leaves. You can dispose of them several ways…

  1. We recommend mulching them
  2. You can compost them
  3. Rake them to the curb (not the street, and they must be DRY)
  4. You may bag them and place them in clear bags

Brush: Not entire trees

The Borough will not take brush when an entire tree is removed.

Make arrangements to also have brush hauled away when trees are removed.

Trimming Trees along streets and alleys:

Brush must be kept trimmed at least 2 feet from the edge of any Borough street or alley.

And limbs must be removed up to 14 feet high. We are trying to protect our snow plowing equipment.

Mailbox Locations:

Make sure your mailbox meets specifications. Fines will be issued for any violations.

We are trying to protect our snow plowing equipment, and vehicles.

Basketball Hoops along Streets:

Portable basketball hoops must be removed from the street right-of-way by November 1st of each year.

They must be at least 30 feet from the center of the street, alley or road.

Waste Management Recycle: Done

Waste Management is no longer offering recycling in Saegertown.

Put old recycle bins out at the curb, so the contractor can pick them up.

Political Signs:

Political Signs are permitted on private property…PROVIDED…they do not exceed 16 square feet in area (total combined if multiple signs). They must be removed at completion of campaign or event. Normal political signs are about 3 square feet. You can have no more than 5 typical signs, or one sign no larger than 4 ft. by 4 ft.

Signs in general (not just political signs) are limited to more than 16 square feet total on the property.

Sidewalks on Main Street:

The Borough will be blowing snow off the Main Street sidewalks this year, once a day as needed. Property owners are required to clean-up any excess and keep ice off them. We prefer others do not plow snow on the walks…we want to blow it off or have you shovel it by hand. If someone plows a parking lot or driveway, and the excess piles up on sidewalks, owners must clean that up.

Snow Parking:

Snow parking regulations start on November 1st, and continue until April 1st.

-NO Parking on ANY street on Saeger-Heights

-NO Parking from Midnight to 7 am on the following streets:

                                -Erie Street          -Main Street

-NO Parking on the East and South side of all other streets on Odd days of the week (1-3-5 etc.)

-NO Parking along all alleys. Vehicles must be at least 10 feet from the center of the alley.

New Ordinances:

Grass on Main: Grass must be maintained between the sidewalk and the street along Main Street.

Weed spraying to kill grass is NOT permissible along Main St.

Keeping streets and alleys clear from brush:

Brush must be kept at least 2 feet from the edge of any street or alley,

and trees must be trimmed to at least 14 feet above the roadway.

This ordinance establishes regulations for services that provide wireless communication when installing hardware along Borough Streets, or on utility poles.

Looking Back…from the “History of Saegertown” by Fortuna and Jordan:

Before Woodcock Dam was built, Saegertown was susceptible to many large floods. Major floods plagued town in 1902, 1913, 1935, 1947 and 1959. Perhaps the worst was in 1902 when it washed several homes off their foundation and swept them downstream. There was a covered wooden bridge where the “lighted iron bridge” is presently located. A house from the end of Broad Street split the old bridge in half. The present bridge was constructed in 1910. Both Woodcock and Union City dams have significantly reduced floods on French Creek.

Safety Tip: Fire Safety Month

October is Fire Safety Month. ●Make sure you have smoke and CO detectors. ●Replace the batteries in smoke detectors. ●Do a fire safety check of your house. ●Make sure kids know how to get out of a house if it is on fire. ●Make sure kids know how to call 9-1-1 ●Make sure kids know their address.
